1930s Oil Painting

Place - Majkuri Village, Jorhat

Courtesy -  Shri Pavan Khound

We found this glass painting at Majkuri, a village situated in Jorhat district. Preserved by Shri Pavan Khound, this portrait of Mahatma Gandhi was done by the legendary painter, poet, dramatist, actor, musician and freedom fighter, Late Debendranath Chakravarty. Apart from his contribution to Assam's struggle for independence, Chakravarty was also known for his artistic talents. He was an exceptional glass painter and most of them akin to the ones done by Nandalal Bose, featured prominent leaders of the freedom movement - Gandhi, Nehru, Sardar Patel and Krishnanath Sarma. It may be mentioned here that Chakravarty faced social ostracisation when he joined the Harijan Movement of 1934 and he had to earn his livelihood by selling his creations. The subjects for his paintings were, therefore, influenced by the context. Sadly, he spent the rest of his days in poverty and neglect and passed away in the year 1965 at the age of 62.
